We're knee-deep in the "Why?" stage. Knee. Deep.
And "I don't know" is not a sufficient answer. Ohhhh no.
Coincidentally, we're reading a lot of Curious George books these days. My son can't get enough of George.
Join me for a reading of Curious George's ABCs, now in progress:
Mom: "X is for X-ray" (George and his friend visit a doctor for an x-ray)
Curious Son: "Why is the man with the yellow hat not wearing his hat? Why?"
Mom: "Hmm. I don't know, honey! (turns page) Y is for...."
Curious Son: (turns back the page) "But why? Why? WHY????"
Mom: "Well, he's getting x-rayed. Maybe the doctor asked him to take off his hat."
Curious Son: "Oh."
-----------------------------------------------
This brings me to the conclusion that any answer other than "I don't know" is fine.

Oh, I am with you, sister. We are there too...
Driving home from preschool:
The Boy: Where are we going mommy?
Mommy: Home
The Boy: Why we going home mommy?
Mommy: Because that's where we live
The Boy: Why that's where we live?
Ugh!! Every day, too! I'm beginning to think that he doesn't really understand what "why" means and that he just puts in front of a sentence to see what happens. He's like a little miniature sociologist seeing how far he can push me before I lose my mind and say what I'm really thinking, which is "Where on God's green earth do you think we're going? They same place we go every day... ahhhhhhhhhh!!!"

Oh, do I ever remember those days! You know how I curbed it? I starting answering the why question with a why question right back.
"Mommy, why is the sky blue?"
"I don't know son. Why is the sky blue?". After awhile, he got tired of me asking right back and it slowed waaay down. LOL. Good luck!

Curious George is PERFECT for the "why" stage! Now, when you get to the "why not" stage, the real trouble begins! ;)

I remember when my oldest was learning colors, I read up on why the sky was blue. I was ready for it. Then the little t.rd asked me why stoplights are red for stopping. I had no clue. Sigh. I learned it though, I learned it. Good luck on the whys... they don't seem to stop.

Right now any answer is acceptable ("other than I don't know")? I'm guessing that's to balance out the teen years when NO answer you give will be acceptable. :)

We've been on "Why?" for a while. And we take the time to explain our answers. Which leads to more "Why?" until there are no more answers. :) Then what? I feel your pain.

I totally understand! "Because" doesn't work either.
