It's wintry here in upstate NY! Cold and snowy. And might pretty, I might add.
This is the kind of weather that makes me want to bake and have a pot of something cooking on the stove. So, today I'm sharing two recipes - one for baking, and one for the top of the stove. First, my Grandma's molasses cookies. These are soft, scrumptious cookies. I don't make them often, but when I do, they are a treat! Make sure you have plenty of milk on hand to enjoy with these cookies!
Molasses Cookies
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup molasses
2 tsp baking soda
1 cup buttermilk (to sour milk - add 1 Tbsp vinegar to 1 cup regular milk)
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp salt
4 1/2 cups flour
Cream sugar, shortening, and egg.
Add molasses, baking soda and milk. Mix.
Add dry ingredients.
Place on greased cookie sheets and bake 10-12 minutes @ 375 degrees.
Sprinkle tops with white sugar.

Think we'd call then Ginger nuts in the UK

I just made gingerbread cookies today with a quite similar recipe. They are yummy!! I like them unfrosted, but my little guy is dying to frost them so tomorrow they'll be ruined with too much frosting, sprinkles, candy, and goop. Then we send them to my husband's office. They'll eat anything there.

Is the recipe on this web site the original Grandma's molasses cookies I had the recipe a long time ago and lost it. I have been looking for it for several years as you not longer put in on the molasses jar. Please let me know. Thanks

I am looking for an older receipe for cookies that were formed into balls, rolled in sugar and then baked. It used to be on the jar but can't find it anymore. Can you help?
